This secret compartment book is a one-off project that I built for a client. Unfortunately the end result didn’t meet RC Creative’s quality standards. We didn’t feel right charging the customer for a less than stellar product. Instead of selling an inferior product at the regular price we’re offering this Proof of Concept Model at a significant discount to any customer that might still appreciate this piece, warts and all.
Construction Details of the Secret Compartment Book
We’re calling this the Secret Compartment Book 2.0 Proof of Concept. We designed the compartment for a Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphone. But we think it’s large enough to store all sorts of things one might like to hide. Possibly in zip-lock baggies, possibly a little skunky, etc. Don’t worry. We won’t judge.
RC Creative used Black’s Law Dictionary to build this project. We constructed the secret compartment in the center of the book using thin cherry hardwood. Your hidden treasures slide into a velvety-soft cherry sleeve faced with paper cutoffs. When you push the sleeve into the book it locks into place, concealed within the pages. When you push the wallet into the compartment, it locks into place. Pushing it again makes it pop back out.
This piece is an imperfect proof of concept. It’s a step between my original design and what will be a more finished version of what you see here. During the build mistakes were made that cause the secret compartment to be not-so-secret. In the photos, you can see the gap that exists between the front of the compartment and the edge of the pages. But it’s still fully functional and we’re hoping we can recoup the cost of materials in order to fund a better build in the future!
